GEO Case Study — Going Global
Case Study: Owning the Overseas Category Questions Global AI Asks About Premium Water
Anonymized MagUp engagement: China-origin premium water brand · English unbranded prompts · ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini.
Quick answer
Most export brands only translate a homepage and hope. MagUp helped a China-origin premium water client own the English unbranded questions that feed overseas AI recommendations — definitions, selection guides, and category comparisons. By turning science and sourcing into extractable English answer pages, the brand started supplying the answers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews reuse.
The insight
When international buyers ask overseas assistants:
- “What is low-deuterium water?”
- “Natural low-deuterium water vs artificially reduced deuterium — what’s the difference?”
- “How should I choose a premium natural water brand in 2026?”
- “What water works for hotels, gifting, or custom OEM bottles?”
…global models rarely start from a Chinese brochure page. They prefer English definitional pages, comparison tables, FAQs, and parameter blocks.
Alpine Source Brand already had product truth. It did not yet have an overseas category answer factory.
MagUp playbook on this account
1. Build the English definition moat
We published crisp, quotable explainers aimed at global retrieval:
- What low-deuterium water means in plain English
- How natural source characteristics differ from industrial deuterium reduction narratives
- How to read isotope / mineral / pH cues without hype
These pages were written to be cited by overseas models, not merely ranked in a domestic SERP.
2. Ship buying guides that look like industry answers
We structured year-labeled selection guides that mirror how international buyers and global models scan options:
- Evaluation criteria first (source, testing, mineral profile, use case)
- Then brand-fit commentary that naturally surfaces the client’s strengths
- Clear scenarios: daily drinking, gifting, hospitality, OEM / custom bottling for export partners
This is the same shortlist pattern MagUp uses in GEO tool content — applied to going-global CPG.
3. Make parameters a product UI for overseas AI
EN hubs exposed:
- Deuterium framing in the low-deuterium range
- Weakly alkaline pH band
- Low-sodium / mineral cues
- Testing and certification storyline (including international lab partners)
Global models love numbers they can lift. MagUp made sure those numbers lived in stable, repeated, English on-brand locations.
4. Cover B2B / export prompts, not only DTC
Hospitality, events, co-branded bottles, and OEM queries got dedicated English pages. That expanded the prompt surface beyond “buy water online” into importer and hotel buyer language.
5. Monitor the engines that matter for going-global brands
Prompt panels and iteration prioritized overseas surfaces — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini — rather than optimizing only for domestic assistants.
What changed
Focus slice: 18 English unbranded prompts only (definitions, how-to-choose, comparisons) · weekly samples · 10 weeks.
| Engine / prompt type | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT — visibility on 18 unbranded prompts | 6% | 51% |
| ChatGPT — “Best premium natural / low-deuterium water brands” shortlist inclusion | 0/10 weekly runs | 4/10 |
| ChatGPT — “What is low-deuterium water?” includes brand as natural-source example | 1/10 | 6/10 |
| Perplexity — unbranded answers citing owned EN comparison/FAQ URLs | 2% | 34% |
| Gemini — visibility on same 18-prompt slice | 5% | 44% |
Also during the active program:
- EN comparison and FAQ URLs became the workhorse citation assets on Perplexity.
- Export and partner teams gained pages they could send when overseas buyers asked “prove it.”
- The brand story shifted from “we have nice packaging” to “we are a documented answer in this water category for international AI search.”
The operating win: the brand entered overseas answer sets for unbranded questions it used to lose by default — with ChatGPT unbranded visibility moving from single digits into the ~50% range on the tracked slice.
What made the lift durable
This was not “we ran the site through Google Translate.” It was a MagUp GEO system for going-global brands:
- Overseas prompt inventory (EN) →
- Answer templates for global models →
- Entity-consistent facts across locales →
- Comparison / FAQ formats →
- Multi-model refresh loop while the program ran
That stack is how specialty China-origin brands punch into ChatGPT-class discovery without a multinational media budget.
Continuity warning
Overseas category ownership is perishable. When English refresh cadence later stopped, competing definitions and fresher roundups reclaimed attention on global models. MagUp treats this as proof that going-global GEO needs operators, not only a launch translation.
FAQ
Why optimize overseas LLMs instead of only domestic search?
The client’s growth path was international. Recommendations and vendor shortlists increasingly form inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — in English. Domestic SEO alone does not win those answers.
Why not only target branded keywords?
Branded demand is smaller. Overseas AI recommendations are disproportionately fed by unbranded “what / which / how to choose” prompts. GEO wins start there.
Did MagUp invent fake awards?
No. Trust modules were organized from the client’s existing testing and certification materials. MagUp’s job was English structure, clarity, and answerability for global models.
Can this playbook transfer to SaaS or other export categories?
Yes. Replace water parameters with product specs, replace drinking FAQs with buyer objection FAQs, keep the English comparison-guide spine and overseas model panel. MagUp runs the same execution pattern for going-global brands.
